Bhawanipatna is a city, and district headquarters of the Kalahandi district, in the Indian state of Odisha. Bhawanipatna is a city of numerous temples dedicated to different deities of Hindu pantheon. It is named after the presiding deity, Bhawani-Shankar and Patna which means place in Odia like “Padaa”. Bhawanipatna municipality is the administrative head of the city, which is divided into twenty wards with different sub-areas called pada (pronounced “padaa”). Originally, these padaas were inhabited by people of different communities, but over the last few decades, these padaas have become homogeneous. Bhawanipatna has more than forty padaas.
History
Bhawanipatna forms an important part of Kalahandi district of Odisha. Located on National Highway – 26 it connects to major places of the state. The city can be reached via both road and railways. Bhawanipatna serves as a headquarters city of its Kalahandi District and it has been a center of attraction due to the presence of ancient temples devoted to Hindu deities . In fact, the city has derived its name from a presiding deity ‘Bhawanishankar’. It also provides a gateway to many travel attractions of Kalahandi region. Apart from the religious places, Bhawanipatna is also blessed with excellent public utility services that help its residents to live comfortably here.
